Exciting news for winter sports enthusiasts and travelers alike, the Winter Park Express, operated by Amtrak, is stepping up its game for the 2025 winter season. According to Amtrak and the Colorado Governor's Office, the railway service will commence its expanded schedule starting Thursday, January 9, 2025, providing rides five days a week, and catering to the holiday rush with special services during late December.
This year, people looking forward to crisp mountain air and snowy slopes can grab tickets at prices significantly lower than before, ranging from $19 to $39. This marks a substantial 43% drop from the past, a potential game-changer for families and budget travelers. Colorado Governor Jared Polis lauded the service, claiming, "The Winter Park Express is a great opportunity for Coloradans and visitors to explore our mountains without the hassle of driving or traffic." He emphasized the savings in time and money that the trains offer, not attacking the roads clogged with vehicles, but he spoke in a statement, as obtained by the Colorado Governor's Office.
Additional stops and cars are also part of the expansion. Now, patrons can hop on the train at Fraser, merely five miles from Winter Park. An inclusion that enhances access for both skiers and non-skiers. This strategic move aims to boost travel options through and beyond the mountain corridor. With the capacity jumping from 268 to 402 seats per ride, and a total of 69 roundtrips planned up by 29 from the previous year. There's both recognition and response to the growing demand for public transit in the region.
Alongside transportation efficiency, this train journey pledges a scenic experience through the Rockies. Travelers get to enjoy Coach class comforts and the Sightseer Lounge's panoramic views, underlined by a no-extra-charge policy for ski gear. CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew expressed her enthusiasm for the project not only for alleviating traffic during peak ski days but also for the commitment to a relaxed, affordable travel option for experiencing Colorado's epic winter destinations according to Colorado's official government website.
Tickets for the Winter Park Express, which connects Denver Union Station to the eponymous resort and Fraser, are now up for grabs online at Amtrak's website or via their mobile app. The services accommodate group bookings of various sizes, with special arrangements for those over 14 requiring a phone call or an email to Amtrak's group sales team.
