An incident unfolded on a Charlotte roadway on Sunday evening as a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle, which resulted in the victim's death the following day. According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's report, the accident occurred at approximately 7:24 p.m. at the intersection of North Graham Street and Dalton Avenue. The pedestrian, Michelle Denise Onley, 54, was found by first responders unresponsive and with serious injuries.

As recounted by CMPD's news release, Elijah O'zion-Sadique McBride, 25, was the driver of a 2002 Ford Taurus. After the incident, the vehicle was stopped a short distance from where Onley was discovered in the road. Despite not being in a marked crosswalk, preliminary findings suggest Onley was crossing North Graham Street when struck by the Ford, which was moving southward in the right-hand lane close to the intersection with Dalton Avenue.

Onley was rapidly transported to Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte, where, tragically, she succumbed to her injuries the next day. Hospital staff pronounced her deceased at 12:29 p.m. yesterday. The CMPD's Major Crash Investigation Unit and Crime Scene Search were brought in to assess the scene and the factors contributing to this fatality.

No signs of impairment or excessive speed appear to have played a part in the collision. Although, McBride was cited for operating a vehicle with a revoked license, as noted by the department's statement. In the wake of the accident, Onley's family has been notified. Pending the ongoing investigation, CMPD encourages any individuals with information or who witnessed the crash to contact Detective Leung or reach out to Crime Stoppers.

Further details will be shared by the CMPD's Public Affairs Office as the investigation progresses. Inquiries about the case can refer to the report number 20241103-1924-00 for more specifics.
