Roads in Wake County are gearing up for a significant face-lift with nearly 10 miles of roadway slated for improvements starting next year. Key thoroughfares affected include sections of N.C. 42, which is set for milling, resurfacing, and shoulder reconstruction. This project, which rings in at a cool $2.5 million, is being bankrolled by the N.C. Department of Transportation and will be managed by local contractors, the Fred Smith Company.
The scope of this project extends from U.S. 401 in Fuquay-Varina to the Wake-Harnett County line, and also includes the stretch between N.C. 55 and Old Stage Road. But it's not just the main roads that are getting all the attention – improvements are also on the cards for 14 sections of secondary roads, promising a smoother ride for motorists across the county. According to N.C. Department of Transportation, contractors have the green light to start as early as spring 2025, with the whole job expected to wrap by fall of 2026.
As always with infrastructure projects of this magnitude, local residents might need to brace for intermittent delays and detours. The N.C. Department of Transportation is committed to keeping disruptions to a minimum and ensuring that thoroughfares remain as navigable as possible throughout the construction period. They've made assurances that all necessary information pertaining detours and traffic management will be made available to the public well in advance of any roadwork starting.
