70-Year-Old Man Charged with Felonies After Deliberate Crash into Tampa's USAA BuildingSource: Tampa Police Department

A 70-year-old man, Robert Beaty, is now facing four felony charges after a purposeful collision into the USAA building in Tampa, police confirmed yesterday. A day prior, at approximately 2:12 p.m., Tampa police were dispatched to the scene at 17200 Commerce Park Blvd upon reports of a vehicle crashing inside a building.

Apparently, the situation escalated when Beaty, after being denied a meeting with a USAA representative at the guard gate, donned a helmet and proceeded to wreak havoc through the parking garage. His path of destruction included several damaged fences, within the property. A security SUV, occupied by two guards tried to intervene by positioning their vehicle behind Beaty's. However, he aggressively reversed and struck their vehicle, making space to continue his rampage.

It wasn't until Beaty reached the third floor of the parking garage that law enforcement was able to apprehend him. According to the Tampa Police Department, there were no injuries reported from the incident, a fortunate detail given the potential for harm.

Following Beaty's arrest, he was taken to Orient Road Jail. The charges laid against him include two felony counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon (specifically, the vehicle/pickup he was driving), one felony count of burglary of an occupied structure and one felony count of criminal mischief — causing $1,000 or more in damages. Beaty is reportedly not a former employee of USAA, and additional information has been promised as the investigation continues to unfold.
