Akron's City Hall will be embracing the holiday spirit by closing its doors to the public on the notable days of December 25 and January 1 in honor of Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, respectively. A representative statement by Mayor Malik encapsulated the city's well-wishes, stating, "On behalf of all of us at the City of Akron, I wish you and your family a safe, happy, healthy holiday season and New Year."

In addition to the office closures, services such as trash and recycling will not be in operation on those dates mentioned above. Residents should expect to quickly adapt to a one-day delay of said services for the remainder of the weeks following both holidays. Curbside collection will then resume regularly from Thursday through Saturday. From December 26 to December 31, Akron residents may conveniently put extra trash beside their carts on their standard collection day to address the heightened waste of festive celebrations.

The increase in waste typically generated during this season often includes wrapping paper and gift boxes, which may outstrip the volume some trash carts can handle. In light of this, the City of Akron Sanitation/Curb Service Division eliminates extra waste without additional charge. This gesture by the city acknowledges the seasonal spike in refuse and seeks to mitigate the potential for overfilled carts and littered streets. It is worth noting that recycling should still be sorted into the appropriate recycling carts, particularly cardboard, and other recyclables.

Following the holiday festivities, the city also has plans to collect residents' holiday trees left on the curb on their usual collection day. The endgame for these trees is a chipping-into-mulch adventure to be carried out by Summit Metro Parks, which also proposes drop-off locations for the live trees, stripped of all decorations, between December 26 and January 31. Importance is placed on the continued beautification efforts within the parks using this recycled mulch. Residents interested in participating in this program can find more details and drop-off locations on the city’s website.
