The Allegheny County Sheriff's Office successfully employed the advanced technology of a drone equipped with a thermal camera to apprehend a suspect with multiple outstanding warrants. As reported by CBS News Pittsburgh, the suspect, Brandon Wheeler, was initially involved in a high-speed chase in June.
After the chase culminated in a collision with another vehicle, Wheeler escaped on foot, initiating a prolonged search. With eight warrants to his name, authorities kept a keen lookout, eventually tracking him to an apartment on Freeport Road in Harrison Township. Upon receiving reports of his whereabouts, detectives, having announced their presence and being met with silence, forced entry into the apartment, only to find Wheeler attempting a bold, albeit futile, escape through a rear window.
Confronted outside, Wheeler was undeterred by the detectives' taser and continued his attempt to evade. However, as detailed in a piece by WTAE, the use of a thermal camera attached to a drone proved pivotal in narrowing down his location. The device detected him as a distinct heat signature in a wooded area, ultimately revealing his position behind a tree near a creek bed, where the chase had begun.
The culmination of this technological manhunt led to Wheeler’s arrest, adding charges of evading arrest, resisting arrest, and flight to avoid apprehension to his list of legal difficulties. These fresh charges pile onto the existing six active warrants, promising a complex legal battle for the 29-year-old. Authorities have not disclosed further details surrounding the previous warrants, but a combination of determination and high-tech law enforcement strategies now thwarts Wheeler's evasion tactics.
