In a solid push to address housing issues, County Executive Sara Innamorato announced the inaugural appointments to Allegheny County's Board of Health Housing Advisory Committee yesterday. According to an Allegheny County press release, the Committee is composed of 13 community leaders and professionals, all aimed at advocating for safe, healthy living conditions across the county.
The newly appointed Committee members come from varied backgrounds, including housing, law, and public health. They form a diverse group tasked with steering the county towards healthier housing. In a statement detailed by Allegheny County's press releases, Innamorato said, "These 13 experts from across the housing, legal, and public health fields will provide critical leadership in our collaborative work to ensure that all Allegheny County residents have access to healthy and safe homes."
Among the appointees is Bob Damewood, Senior Staff Attorney at Regional Housing Legal Services; Charlise Smith, who helms Willissae's Agency for Vision and Empowerment; and David Onufer, President of the Realtors Association of Metropolitan Pittsburgh. The Committee's expertise stretches wide with members like Devon Goetz, Director of Housing at Auberle, and Dwight Boddorf, Tarentum Borough's Manager.
Dr. Iulia Vann, Director of the Allegheny County Health Department, emphasized the link between housing and communal well-being. "Safe, affordable, and equitable housing is essential to building a healthy and thriving community," she said. Meanwhile, ACHD's environmental health administrator, Tim Murphy, praised the formation of the Committee, tasked with helping drive mission-critical ventures such as reducing public health risks and ensuring safe housing for all county residents. The county news release stated, "This set of Housing Advisory Committee members will help us by increasing community engagement and creating a path for direct feedback on matters related to housing and neighborhood complaints, lead exposure, and pest and vector control."
Paving the way for a comprehensive housing strategy was approved on September 10 by the County Council. The Advisory Committee is a leap forward in dealing with the housing challenges of Allegheny County, an endeavor that is sure to gain momentum with this latest development.
