In a harrowing turn of events in Queens, a driver identified as Fabrice Bayonne, 32, of Amityville, was arrested after hitting two pedestrians with his BMW during a flight from police. According to ABC7NY, the suspect was initially stopped in Astoria and then again in East Elmhurst, with police citing erratic driving but denying a high-speed chase.
The incident occurred yesterday near 80th Street and Northern Boulevard in Jackson Heights where surveillance footage captured the BMW careening into the intersection, hitting a man and a woman in their 20s, reported NBC New York; the vehicle came to a halt against a FDNY 911 callbox, which possibly prevent it from escalating into a more tragic scene as the car nearly slammed into a nearby restaurant, the driver and a passenger in the BMW fled on foot after the crash, one subsequently stopped while the other managed to briefly evade capture.
Bayonne was apprehended and is now facing charges, while the two victims of the crash are expected to recover, with ABC7NY documenting that a 23-year-old man suffered a leg laceration and a 28-year-old woman experienced back pain, both are currently stable.
The NYPD continues investigations.
