Historic strides have been made toward Arizona's future energy sustainability with the passing of a significant hydropower expansion bill. The bill, co-introduced by Senators Mark Kelly and Kyrsten Sinema along with Representatives David Schweikert and Greg Stanton, aims to substantially bolster the state’s energy infrastructure through advanced pumped-storage hydropower. After smoothly sailing through the Senate by Unanimous Consent, the much-anticipated legislation is now poised to be signed into law. The president's approval will cement the culmination of extensive bipartisan efforts to enhance Arizona’s energy supply. It had previously passed the House with an overwhelming vote of 384-1, as reported by Kelly's Senate webpage.
The enactment of this legislation is set to lead to the research and deployment of pumped-storage hydropower within the Salt River system near Roosevelt Dam. This innovative approach seeks to cleverly use electricity, from intervals when demand falls low, to pump water up to a higher elevation reservoir. The stored water can then be released during peak energy demand periods, ensuring grid compliance and concurrently reducing energy costs for the populace. “Expanding pumped-storage hydropower in Arizona will strengthen our energy grid and lower energy costs for families,” Senator Kelly affirmed, signaling the commitment to render energy not only more reliable but also affordable, as per the Arizona Senator Newsroom. On the Senate floor, Kelly actively advocated for the bill, emphasizing the need for swift legislative support at the committee hearing.
Arizona's elected officials have collectively hailed the progress of the bill. Senator Sinema expressed pride in the legislative measure aimed at lowering energy expenditures through cleaner energy storage and eagerly anticipated its enactment into law. Meanwhile, Schweikert commended Arizona for consistently pioneering innovative solutions that enhance efficiency in tandem with the state's burgeoning population and economy. "The near unanimous support for this legislation proves that America is ready to embrace long-term energy storage technologies to expand the supply of affordable and reliable energy for our communities," Schweikert extolled the national reception of the initiative, as stated by the press release. Representative Stanton celebrated the Senate's passage of the legislation, highlighting the enhanced flexibility and reliability that pumped-storage projects introduce to the energy grid, which in turn trims utility costs for both Arizona families and businesses.
