In a season that could only be described as a resounding turnaround, the Arizona State Sun Devils secured their place in the Big 12 Championship game with a decisive 49-7 victory over in-state rivals, the Arizona Wildcats. According to 12News, this emphatic win brings ASU to a 10-2 record, marking a stark improvement from last season's 3-9 finish.
The game, which served as the Territorial Cup, saw ASU rusher Cam Skattebo dominate with 177 yards and three touchdowns – an impressive performance that left little chance for the Wildcats to claw back into contention, 12News reported. Sam Leavitt, ASU's quarterback, connected on 17-of-22 passes hurling for three touchdowns, and 291 yards in a game that exemplified ASU's offensive prowess this season. However, a shadow was cast on the day as leading wide receiver Jordyn Tyson left the field with an injury to his shoulder, leaving fans to speculate on his availability for the next big game.
The defense also played its part, as ASU limited Arizona to a mere 210 yards, while the Sun Devils' own offense amassed a total of 643 yards. As per AZCentral, the Sun Devils also showcased depth with backup quarterback Trenton Bourguet throwing a standout 64-yard touchdown pass to Derek Eusebio, which marked Eusebio's first career reception.
While ASU celebrated, it was a tough finale for Arizona. The Wildcats concluded their season with a disappointing 4-8 record, falling short of bowl-game eligibility. "Arizona's Tetairoa McMillan had six catches for 68 yards and a touchdown in what will likely be his final game before heading to the NFL," 12News reported.
