As the holiday season ramps up, so does the collective effort to curb drunk driving in Arlington. The leading cause of road deaths in the area is drunk driving, with a staggering 75% of fatal injuries in traffic crashes involving alcohol since 2022. The Arlington County's Vision Zero team, alongside the Arlington County Police Department (ACPD), is targeting this pervasive issue with an anti-drunk driving campaign, as Arlington Virginia, reported earlier this week. The initiative aims to mitigate the risks associated with holiday festivities through community education and practical alternatives for safe transport.
The campaign's outreach includes disseminating informative flyers and coasters at local bars and restaurants, reminding patrons of the dangers and legal consequences of drunk driving. The focus of the campaign is to equip the community with the tools necessary for having difficult but crucial conversations about the dangers of alcohol-impaired driving. The educational materials direct individuals to a resource page with detailed guidelines on intervening and preventing potential drunk driving situations.
Arlington residents are offered several safer alternatives to driving under the influence. Among these is the SoberRide® initiative, a complimentary service noted for increasing public safety during key holidays known for elevated drinking and driving instances. Public transportation options, such as the WMATA Metrorail, Metrobus, and Arlington Transit buses, and suggestions like designated drivers, rideshares, and taxis are being promoted.
Bar and restaurant owners are also encouraged to be vigilant. They're encouraged to monitor alcohol consumption, verify the age of persons obtaining alcoholic beverages, and even offer non-alcoholic drink discounts for designated drivers. Establishments have also been asked to display safe-ride program information conspicuously, a move that aims to reinforce the availability of safe transportation options after drinking.
In a coordinated effort to crack down on impaired driving, the ACPD will participate in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign through increased patrols and checkpoints. According to Arlington Virginia, This enforcement aligns with nationwide law enforcement strategies to detect and apprehend those driving under the influence during the holiday season. If Arlington residents suspect an impaired driver, they're urged to contact the ACPD or dial 9-1-1 in case of an emergency. More information on these safety initiatives is available on the county's Vision Zero program page.
