An Arizona State University sophomore, Mara Daffron, is on a path to recovery after being attacked by a classmate with a knife in an ASU classroom. Survivor of the September 19 incident, Daffron recounted the harrowing experience to 12News, expressing gratitude for being alive. A Navy Veteran and fellow classmate, Matt McCormick, intervened during the attack, disarming and subduing the assailant until police arrived, a swift action the Daffron family credits with possibly saving Mara's life.
Mara Daffron, who is pursuing a sports business degree, was reportedly chosen as the target because the attacker thought she was "an easier target." Though initially facing charges that included first-degree attempted murder, her alleged assailant, Kaci Sloan, has had the more serious charges dropped. As detailed by 12News, Sloan is still scheduled to stand trial in February 2025.
The community has also rallied behind Mara through a crowdfunding effort. A GoFundMe campaign was established to help with expenses during this challenging time. "We know Mara will come out stronger than ever from this unimaginable attack," the campaign page assures, underlining the community's commitment to uplifting one of their own in the face of adversity.
