Atlanta's music community is mourning the loss of rapper OG Maco, who has died at the age of 32. FOX 5 Atlanta reported that the rapper, born Maco Mattox, passed away Thursday night while surrounded by family members at a hospital in Los Angeles. His death followed a hospitalization due to a critical gunshot wound to the head, which authorities believe to have been self-inflicted.
The solemn news of his passing was confirmed by his family through an Instagram post on Friday. "With heavy hearts, we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our beloved Ben, known to the world as OG Maco," the family said in a statement that highlighted his impact on music and people's lives. "His life was a testament to resilience, creativity, and boundless love. Through his music, passion, and unwavering spirit, he touched so many lives and left a lasting impact," the family shared to FOX 5 Atlanta.
OG Maco's career took off with his 2014 viral hit "U Guessed It" which led to his signing with Quality Control Music. His music was known for its energetic and aggressive style, which encompassed a blend of trap, punk, and experimental sounds. Despite adversity, including a life-altering car accident in 2016 which resulted in the loss of an eye and a battle with a severe skin condition in 2019, Maco continued to create and share his music. People noted that his influence will "remain forever etched in our hearts" according to his family's poignant message.
Prior to his untimely death, it was disclosed that Maco was in "critical but stable condition" via an Instagram post. According to AllHipHop, Maco's manager, Poppa Perc, expressed at the time, "I thought he was dead when I first saw him. We were about rebrand and drop [new music] under a whole new alias. We need everyone's prayers." Perc revealed that Maco was on life support and still fighting while in intensive care, and the family asked for prayers as they faced this challenging time, as reported by People.
Born Benedict Chiajulam Ihesiba Jr., the Atlanta native grew from his humble beginnings in the College Park neighborhood to become a well-regarded figure in the hip-hop community. His breakout single "U Guessed It" reached No. 90 on the Billboard Hot 100 and even secured a remix with 2 Chainz. Maco's inclusion in XXL's 2015 Freshman class, alongside artists like Fetty Wap and Vince Staples, as well as collaborations with names like Diplo and Migos, solidified his status in the industry.
