An 18-year-old Aurora man, identified as Jamir Deante Bright, was arrested on felony charges including child exploitation and criminal extortion, connected to an alleged sextortion scheme in Aurora. As reported by 9News, the arrest by Aurora Police Department's Internet Crimes Against Children unit last Friday follows an investigation that started in January, aimed at addressing a pattern of exploitation targeting students at multiple local schools.
The Aurora Police Department describes sextortion as a form of exploitation where children are coerced into sharing explicit images or sometimes blackmailed with the threat of publishing such images, and in some cases, perpetrators demand money in exchange for keeping the images private, as detailed by CBS News Colorado. Parents and caregivers have been offered advice from authorities to help prevent such incidents from occurring, stressing the importance of awareness and open communication about online risks.
Bright is amongst three teens accused in the scheme that has shaken the local Aurora community, as KDVR reports. The Aurora Police Department is urging victims to come forward, assuring them support and thorough investigations "to express that to these victims, that it is important for them to come forward and that we will support them by thoroughly investigating these cases and hopefully bringing these offenders to justice," as stated by KDVR.
