The transformation of Towson's Days Inn into an affordable housing complex is progressing, with Baltimore County allocating $8 million from COVID-related funds towards purchasing the property, as stated in a press release quoted by WMAR-2 News. The project, named "Loch Raven Overlook," situated at the intersection of Joppa Road and Loch Raven Boulevard, is expected to begin construction in early 2026 and will comprise two buildings housing a total of 122 units, 115 of which will contribute to the county's ambitious target of creating 1,000 units of affordable housing.
The motel, which has been cited as a hotspot for crime, including 461 calls for service last year, is slated for demolition—a move welcomed by officials and locals. County Executive Johnny Olszewski emphasized the developmental shift, "The soon-to-be former Days Inn site has been a challenge for this community," according to WBAL-TV. The project is meant to address housing concerns and is seen as a catalyst for revitalizing the Loch Raven commercial corridor and enhancing public safety.
Alongside the local investment, a state tax credit and funding via a Strategic Demolition Fund have also been secured for the property. Baltimore County Councilman Mike Ertel conveyed enthusiasm about the development, saying, "We are excited about the prospect of having a new residential apartment community in an area that has been a blighted property for many years," as quoted by WMAR-2 News. The complex is set to feature units earmarked for up to 60 percent of the area's median income, with one to three-bedroom options available, ensuring affordability for decades.
Osprey Properties is spearheading the development, which includes plans for a building with aesthetic value and community benefit. Brian Lopez, president of Osprey Properties, outlined the additional amenities, "In addition to building a beautiful building that is going to help the aesthetics of the area, the project will have over 7,000 square feet of amenity space for our residents. We are also building a 3,000-square-foot workforce training center," as per WBAL-TV. Including a workforce training center aims to bring further value to the Loch Raven area by fostering skill development and job opportunities. The much-awaited demolishment of the existing motel structure and the commencement of the new construction are anticipated to affect the community's landscape and its economic prospects.
