In a recent social media post by the Blaine Police Department, the spotlight shone on Emily Douglas, their Community Outreach Coordinator, who details her multifaceted role that bridges department members with the broader community. Among her duties, coordinating community events, shaping crime prevention strategies, and managing the department's social media stand out as pillars of her work. As noted in the BPD's feature, Douglas finds joy in "promoting positive relationships between department members and the community," which is epitomized by her pivotal involvement in the Blaine Safety Services Citizens Academy.
Douglas's journey to Blaine Police Department began in the summer of 2022, following an 18-year stint at the Anoka County Attorney’s Office where she worked with victims and witnesses. She also recalls her early days as a juvenile probation officer, which modestly started her path in public service – a lifeguard and water safety instructor before she embraced roles more anchored in community justice.
One particular case that left an indelible mark on Douglas involved a young girl who was battling cancer and couldn't attend the annual Heroes & Helpers event. Speaking with a genuine fondness that seeped through the department’s post, Douglas recounted, "There was a young lady who couldn't participate in the shopping spree at Target because her immune system was so compromised from going through cancer treatments." In a creative twist, the Community Outreach Team conducted a virtual spree for the child, bringing gifts right to her doorstep, and Douglas vividly remembered "how her eyes smiled so big" during the special delivery.
Motivation for her comes daily from a place of camaraderie and admiration for her co-workers, who impress her with their problem-solving skills and commitment to public safety. Douglas takes pride in the department culture that encourages professional development, appreciating the administration's support for innovation, giving her the freedom to shape her role. The community outreach is a testament to her passion for such endeavors, underscored by an openness to new ideas from all department members looking to bond with the community they serve.
Douglas cites a quote by Willa Cather, "There are some things you learn best in calm, some in storm," as a source of inspiration bridging her personal and professional spheres. The theme of balance rings true as she juggles the demands of work, particularly managing social media, with her personal life, striving to establish boundaries ensuring she can "show up as her best possible self for both."
Her roots lay in Northeast Minneapolis and Columbia Heights, and despite a whimsical childhood ambition of being a part-time mermaid and Taco Bell employee, Douglas now seeks more grounded aspirations of happiness and authenticity. Her leisure time is filled, as she explains, with an array of pastimes from traveling and kickboxing to thrifting and enjoying the serenity of a boat ride.
In reflecting upon her goals, both personal and professional, Douglas wishes to "Live simply and authentically with no regrets." Whether it be her favorite movie, "The Brothers Bloom," or her affection for baby goats and popcorn, Douglas's profile paints a picture of an individual devoted to service, community connection, and the simple pleasures in life.
