Boulder County is taking strides to centralize services and increase sustainability with its recent acquisition of a new building. The location at 2525 28th St., which cost the county $14.2 million, is set to become a hub for various departments, echoing the models established by the St. Vrain Community Hub in Longmont and the Southeast Community Hub in Lafayette. According to Boulder County, the move is rooted in a post-pandemic shift towards online and self-service options and an ongoing need for consolidated customer-facing office spaces.

In the wake of a Space Optimization Study completed earlier this year, the county identified the need to upgrade to improve energy efficiency and better public access, challenges that existing county-owned facilities couldn't meet. The transition to the new location is expected to span over a year, but hopes are high that once it's completed, it will reduce the county's Boulder-based office footprint by a notable 17%. Yvette Bowden, Assistant County Administrator and executive sponsor for the Space Optimization Study project remarked, "Good governance and the stewardship of public resources is always a county priority thoughtfully considered for both short-term impacts and long-term opportunities," as obtained by Boulder County. The shift is also forecasted to reduce operational costs by $15 million in the next eight years, with energy savings estimated at $1.7 million over the same period.

Currently, several departments operate from the North Broadway Complex at 1333 Iris Avenue. These will eventually be shifted to the new 28th Street hub following a "modest" remodel aimed at enhancing energy efficiency. The county's pursuit seems to be a blend of practicality and foresight, seeking not only immediate improvements in energy performance but also more efficient and safer public access to services.
