The Majestic Theatre will remain closed tonight for what would have been another performance of the Broadway revival of Gypsy, as the show's producers announced the cancellation on social media due to an ongoing illness within the company. NBC New York reported that this is the fifth performance to be canceled, following disruptions to the musical's run affecting both the cast and crew.
Theatergoers with tickets in hand were left disappointed after the Gypsy social media channels announced the cancellations of performances on December 23, 25, 26 (twice), and today. Having opened just last Thursday, the timing of the illness has been particularly challenging for the fledgling revival. In light of this, the production team stated earlier in the week that "we are very quickly getting all our understudies up to speed," signaling an attempt to navigate the rocky start, as per their social media update, reported by NBC New York.
The frustration among patrons was palpable, with FOX 5 New York citing a few vocal reactions published online. Anticipating future announcements, one user shared, "For those of us traveling in for the matinee tomorrow, it would be great to have some advance notice on that one - thanks!" Others expressed their displeasure more bluntly with comments such as, "Such a joke. #TheShowMustGoOn," highlighting the far-reaching impact of the disruption.
The show, starring Audra McDonald and Danny Burstein, follows the life of striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee and the ambitions of her mother, Rose. The musical is recognized for its portrayal of the challenges in performance careers. Ticket holders for the canceled performances can receive refunds, including the ticket price and service fees, as outlined by Broadway.com.
