Excitement is building in Capitol Hill as the community prepares to break ground on a new outdoor multicultural plaza designed to celebrate the area's Hispanic heritage. The event, open to all, is scheduled for January 15 at 1:30 p.m., marking the start of construction on a unique space envisioned to foster unity and pride within the historic neighborhood, according to the City of Oklahoma City.
Hosted at We the People Consulting on SW 25th Street, the groundbreaking ceremony will set in motion the creation of a plaza meant to warmly invite not just those of Latin origin, but individuals from across the city, to gather and connect. As explained by Gloria Torres, Executive Director of the Capitol Hill Business District, in a statement obtained by the City of Oklahoma City, "The plaza is our family, friends and neighbor's gathering spot. Whether from a Latin country or just the other side of town, the plaza will make you feel welcomed and at home."
Located on Harvey Avenue, bordered by an historic church and local businesses, the $2 million project draws upon federal funds allocated for the City of Oklahoma City's Strong Neighborhoods Initiative. The plaza promises to display cultural aesthetics reminiscent of Latin American countries, boasting vibrant art, ornate Talavera tiles, and a selection of other features that pay homage to the Hispanic community.
The investment signifies the City's commitment to celebrating OKC's vibrant Hispanic heritage, with improvements hoped to spark further revitalization in the Capitol Hill area. In a display of support, city program planner Shannon Entz highlighted to the City of Oklahoma City the spirited partnership, saying, "The City is proud to work alongside Capitol Hill and bring resources to this project that has been discussed for two decades." The completed plaza is eagerly anticipated to open its gates next August.
Moreover, the community enhancement plan includes the simultaneous construction of a trail spur that will connect the new plaza to Wiley Post Park. This trail is set to provide improved neighborhood access to park amenities, linking residents closely to the benefits of outdoor spaces.
