In Western North Carolina, a Catawba man was sentenced to a decade behind bars for his role in trafficking narcotics, specifically fentanyl and methamphetamine, according to a statement by Dena J. King, the U.S. Attorney for the district. Antoine Durel Reid, 39, received a 10-year prison term which will be followed by five years of supervised release. The conviction ties back to a series of events chronicling Reid's involvement in drug activities that culminated in his arrest and subsequent guilty plea.
The case against Reid built momentum on February 22, 2022, when law enforcement, having kept an eye on Reid, pulled him over for an expired license plate. A thorough search revealed a trove of illicit substances: nearly half a kilogram of methamphetamine, over 260 grams of fentanyl, and a loaded 9mm handgun, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. An additional incident on July 21, 2023, escalated matters when police responding to an assault at a gas station tied Reid to the scene using video evidence, leading to his arrest the following day.
In August of 2024, Reid accepted his fate pleading guilty to possession with intent to distribute the potent drugs he was caught with. Currently held in federal custody, Reid awaits transfer to a designated federal prison where he’ll serve his sentence. His plea closed the chapter on a series of investigations conducted by the ATF, Catawba County Sheriff's Office, and Hickory Police Department.
