
An officer-involved shooting occurred on Wilkinson Boulevard, prompting an investigation by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI). Late Saturday evening, an officer shot a man reported to have been wielding a firearm outside Coyote Joe’s. The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, was declared dead at the scene, according to a press release from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD).
The incident unfolded shortly after 11 p.m. when officers responded to reports of a man with a gun. One officer, perceiving a deadly threat, fired at the man resulting in his death, the firearm in question was found nearby. As part of the procedure, the officer involved has been placed on paid administrative leave while investigations are underway.
Representatives from various departments, including CMPD's Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Search, responded alongside officials from the Charlotte Fire Department, MEDIC, and the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Office. They were joined at the site by members of the CMPD’s Executive Staff and Internal Affairs.
An Internal Affairs investigation is running in parallel with the SBI’s leading efforts.
