Residents of Charlotte, North Carolina, might be reaching for a light jacket rather than their heavy coats this week. A bit of foggy and misty mornings aren't putting a damper on a forecast that, according to the National Weather Service, predicts mostly cloudy skies with high temperatures rising steadily throughout the week.
For early risers today, they faced patchy fog and a chill in the air with the mercury hovering at 42°F and humidity levels at 89 percent. "Patchy fog before 10am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 56. Light and variable wind," is what the National Weather Service said, clearly indicating a slight reprieve from the winter's cold bite. Come nightfall, the fog will be making a modest encore, keeping temperatures just a tad under 50 degrees.
Going into tomorrow, Charlotteans can partly thank the sun for making an appearance as the day reaches a warmer high near 66. The wind, taking a cue from the southwest, maintains a gentle pace at 5 to 7 mph. Things get a bit more interesting tomorrow night when the forecast hints at a 30 percent chance of showers, not enough to necessitate a full-on rain dance, but you might see less than a tenth of an inch of precipitation.
Wednesday, the area teeters between two climes: while "a 40 percent chance of showers, mainly after 2pm," the day will kick off mostly sunny with highs flirting with the 70-degree mark, according to the National Weather Service. The weather gods will flavor the day with a light south southwest wind turning more assertive, gusting up to 21 mph. Wednesday night will see this sprinkle-play continue, although skies start clearing towards the latter part of the night.
As for the tail end of the week, it appears to herald a return to more typical December temps. Thursday sees the sunshine in full effect, yet holding a brisk high around 56. The nights will follow suit, inching towards the cool side of the thermometer. But do not worry; the chill comes with a caveat, namely the promise of mostly clear skies, ensuring the stars are on unclouded display.
The weekend shapes up to be sunny and bright, albeit with highs that remind us that winter isn't quite done with us yet. Saturday's high is expected to peak at a brisk 46 degrees, and by nightfall, temperatures could dip to a chilly 25. Barring any surprise from Mother Nature, Sunday rounds out the week with clear skies and a high near 41 degrees.
