A three-month-old infant died Sunday in Chevy Chase, and the child's mother is now in police custody. The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue were called to a residence on the 7300 block of Summit Avenue around 12:15 p.m., following a report of an infant drowning, according to FOX 5 DC.

Upon arrival, emergency services found the unresponsive baby and transported them to the hospital, where the child was pronounced dead. As the investigation continues, police have taken the baby's mother into custody at the scene, although the specific circumstances leading to this event have not been detailed. The body has been sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy to officially determine the cause and manner of death.

Residents of the neighborhood expressed their dismay and concern. "I’m just heartbroken to learn what happened and shocked, but I'm thinking of the family who was affected and impacted. … It’s just really tragic and shocking," said neighbor Katie Howard in a statement obtained by NBC Washington. Howard emphasized the close-knit nature of the community and the shared sentiment of shock reverberating through their streets.

Another local, Megan Blaine, echoing Howard's sentiments, told WUSA 9, "My first reaction is just shocked. It’s horrible. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family."
