A U.S. Park Police motor sergeant was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon when his motorcycle collided with a vehicle at the intersection of Route 50 and Loudoun County Parkway, shutting down the busy commuter corridor for hours as investigators worked the scene. The crash happened around 1:45 p.m., according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office, which said the sergeant was on duty at the time of the collision.
That detail marks a shift from how the incident was first described. Initial coverage from WJLA reported the officer was off duty when he was struck, but later accounts attributed an on-duty description to the sheriff's office. The discrepancy between the two accounts has not been publicly reconciled, and it remains unclear why the officer's duty status was first reported differently.
The sergeant was hospitalized with serious injuries. Reporting by Loudoun Now, cited by Ashburn Patch, said those injuries were evaluated as non-life-threatening. The occupants of the other vehicle were released from the scene, the same reporting noted.
Hours-Long Closure Snarled Traffic Near Dulles West Boulevard
Route 50 was closed near Loudoun County Parkway and Dulles West Boulevard while crews worked the scene. The closure was expected to remain in place for several hours as the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office Crash Reconstruction Unit investigated the circumstances of the collision, per the same account. Westbound drivers approaching the closure were limited to right turns only, and law enforcement urged motorists to avoid the area and use alternate routes.

Statewide Numbers Underscore the Risk to Riders
Virginia State Police warned in May that statewide motorcycle crash fatalities in 2026 were tracking close to the elevated levels recorded in 2024 and 2025. Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles statistical analyses cited by Dulaney, Lauer & Thomas found that motorcycle riders in Virginia are 16 times more likely to die in a traffic crash per mile traveled than passenger vehicle occupants, with roughly 80 percent of motorcycle collisions resulting in injury or death.
No charges have been announced in connection with Wednesday's Route 50 crash.
The collision also arrives amid a string of serious wrecks on federally maintained roads in the region. Earlier this month, a multi-vehicle collision on Suitland Parkway, a federally maintained route patrolled by the U.S. Park Police, injured 10 people, as Hoodline reported.
