As budget constraints tighten their grip on local governments, Clear Creek County has announced workforce reductions and a shift to a 32-hour workweek for most county operations. The changes, set to affect administrative, planning, and non-emergency services, are a direct response to a significant budget shortfall spurred by declining sales tax revenues and recent legislative actions that have further cut into property tax revenue.

According to Clear Creek County, four employees will be involuntarily leaving their posts, while four vacant positions will be eliminated. "We deeply appreciate these employees’ hard work, dedication, and the positive impact they have had on our organization and community," read a part of the announcement. Despite the job performance of the affected employees, the county sees these layoffs and cutbacks as essential measures on the path to financial stability.

Beginning January 2, 2025, the new business hours will see county buildings open to the public from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. However, essential services such as the Sheriff's Office, Emergency Medical Services, and Transit will not be affected by this change. The Public Works department will maintain usual road plowing and upkeep, yet will align its office hours with the new county standard.

These challenging steps come after a long-term approach to address the county's fiscal woes, highlighted by a reduction in the workforce from 228 full-time equivalents (FTEs) to 193 since 2015. "As always, we value the dedication and hard work of staff, and we’ll continue to communicate openly as we navigate these challenges together," the Board of County Commissioners stated, as per Clear Creek County. Despite the reduced hours, the commitment to serve the residents remains unwavering, with an emphasis on innovative problem-solving and transparent communication during the transition.
