Clevelanders braced for a wintry mix Wednesday as the National Weather Service in Cleveland detailed a cold front sweeping eastward across the region. Residents experienced a combination of rain and snow throughout the day, with possible snow accumulations amounting to a mere trace. As the system moved on, the area looked ahead to a brisk Thursday with cooler temperatures in the pipeline.
Visibility on the roads varied between VFR (Visual Flight Rules) and IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) in precipitation, occasionally dropping to poor levels during periods of heavier snowfall. The National Weather Service forecast discussion noted the emergence of patchy fog across northern Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania in the morning, which was expected to clear as the day progressed—this minor inconvenience to commuters dissipated by late morning, giving way to the daytime's precipitation.
Behind the front, a surface ridge was building from the central U.S., promising a fleeting moment of respite before the onset of lake-effect snow showers across the snowbelt regions late Wednesday into Thursday. Forecasts predicted possible accumulations of one to three inches in the most persistent snowfall areas, with higher terrain regions like Geauga County in Ohio and southern Erie County in Pennsylvania potentially receiving the bulk of it.
The marine forecast was equally active, with the National Weather Service issuing Small Craft Advisories for parts of Lake Erie. Winds were expected to build from the west or northwest, with lakefront zones from Vermilion east experiencing waves of 3 to 5 feet. Advisory conditions were anticipated to persist into early Thursday before relenting. Boaters were advised to exercise caution as the choppy conditions took hold.
Looking ahead, a clipper system was set to sweep through the region by Thursday night, leading into Friday, threatening to deliver additional snow showers. This fast-moving system could leave a fresh coating of one to two inches across much of the area, marking a snowy conclusion to the week. The short-term outlook indicated temperatures hovering in the low to mid-thirties, with nighttime lows steadily dropping into the teens by Saturday night.
