The revived Public Auditorium in Cleveland has opened its doors to the Cleveland Charge, marking a new chapter for the city's G League basketball team. In an invigorating move, the Charge played their inaugural game at Public Hall against the Wisconsin Herd and secured a victory with a score of 141-131. This development comes from a six-year lease agreement and $3 million in renovations to transform the historic venue into a modern sports facility.
In a statement obtained by Crain's Cleveland Business, Rocco Maragas, the Charge’s Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, expressed his fondness for the renovated space, stating, I can't help but continue to fall in love with it. This building looks amazing. Maragas also highlighted the state-of-the-art improvements to the locker rooms, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems. To eagerly further upgrade fan experiences, technology such as a new LED video board and DJ booth were introduced, along with all-inclusive courtside club access.
Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb attended the Friday game, supporting the initiative. Emphasizing the city's sporting culture, Mayor Bibb told Cleveland19, "I'm a big believer in keeping all of our pro sports teams downtown... Cleveland is a sports town, it's in our DNA." With an average attendance surpassing last season's numbers, the Charge's move to Public Hall seems to meet the community's desire for downtown sporting events.
Public Hall's makeover was not just logistic-driven but also embraced aesthetic synergy with Cleveland's sports culture. According to News5Cleveland, the space is graced with gold trim and artwork that resonates with the city's identity. The basketball court design was specifically chosen to complement the venue's historic charm, featuring colors and motifs inspired by Playhouse Square. "It matches this building perfectly so we couldn't ask for a better fit," said Liron Fanan, the Charge’s general manager.
The transition to Public Hall delivers an upgraded sporting venue and continues to intertwine with Cleveland's storied past in the arts and politics. As the Charge joins a long list of acts to grace the historic venue, they aim to carve their legacy amidst the echoes of legendary performers and important events that once filled the space. For fans looking to witness the Charge's contribution to this legacy, ticket information is available for upcoming games at Public Hall.
