The community of College Park is grappling with heartache and frustration following the sudden, tragic death of Amanda 'Mandy' Sylvester, a 15-year-old volleyball player who collapsed during practice at the Tracey Wyatt Recreation Center. Despite the arrival of the College Park Fire Rescue within about eight minutes, the ambulance to transport Amanda to the hospital never arrived. As a result, her mother was forced to drive her critically ill daughter to the hospital herself, as reported by FOX5.
A week after the unfortunate incident, the response system appeared to buckle under pressure due to a lack of available ambulances, a situation further complicated by what FOX 5 referred to as 'limited information' provided by the College Park communications center. 'They’re at level zero right now, meaning they don’t have any ambulances available,' a radio call from the scene revealed. This systemic failure has thrust the city into the spotlight, highlighting a glaring deficiency in emergency medical resources south of I-20.
A vigil held by the College Park volleyball team painted a portrait of a beloved teammate whose presence uplifted those around her. According to Atlanta News First, teammates and friends gathered to honor Sylvester, recalling her ability to brighten even the darkest days. "She brightened my day. If I had a hard day, I’d come in, and she’d greet me with a hug," coach Maya Rembert shared, underscoring the profound impact Mandy had on those she interacted with.
In response to the flow of events, Catherine Murray, the Dream Chasers coach, voiced her exasperation to FOX 5, "Something’s gotta give, When I say something’s gotta give, it’s like something happened, and we’ve got to fix whatever that is that allowed that to happen." The Fulton County Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy to determine the exact cause of Sylvester's death while a memorial service for the young athlete was scheduled for Wednesday.
