Commerce City Police are on the lookout for an individual who miraculously survived electrocution after evidently attempting to cut through a wire at a transformer, causing a power outage and two explosions. The incident, unfolding early Thursday morning near 10500 Havana Street, was confirmed by a discovery of charred clothing and a bicycle close to the transformer, as reported by KDVR.
During the subsequent power outage, United Power dispatched crews to investigate, finding a hacksaw, cut wire, and the alarming remnants of burned clothing. Joanna Small, public information officer for the Commerce City Police Department, expressed disbelief in the survival of the individual involved. As reported by 9NEWS, "United Power told us we should probably be looking for a body."
Despite thorough searches with drones and infrared technology by the city's police and firefighter partners, the individual evaded immediate discovery. Surveillance footage later revealed two explosions followed by a person walking away from the scene, suggesting the person stripped off their charred outer layer and may now be moving about, potentially with severe injuries. "He could very well be walking around Commerce City semi-nude… although we didn’t receive any “naked man” calls yesterday and he’s likely clothed (and in desperate need of medical attention) by now," the police mentioned, as detailed by 9News.
Authorities stress that the suspect, beyond causing substantial harm to infrastructure, is likely suffering from serious injuries. The Commerce City Police have urged the public to help identify the suspect using the bicycle left behind at the scene, encouraging anyone with information to contact the tip line at 303-289-3626.
