Christmas weekend in North Andover was marred by an act of senseless destruction when McAloon's Liquors, a local fixture for nearly half a century, was vandalized yesterday morning. As per a report by NBC10 Boston, the owner, Bill Buco, was alerted by police around 1:30 a.m. to the calamity that had befallen his shop. It was a disheartening sight; hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of alcohol lay in ruin, not looted but shattered, their spirits freed in the most tragic of fashions right before the new year.
Calling upon professionals to handle the aftermath seemed the only logical step to Buco, but the community had other plans. Quickly assembling as dawn broke, locals armed themselves not with pitchforks and torches seeking retribution, but with brooms and dustpans in a show of solidarity. "The love in this town is incredible and the people who live here -- I hope they appreciate that," Buco said, visibly moved, as neighbors gathered to help clean up the shop, according to NBC10 Boston.
While the reason behind the vandalism remains a mystery, North Andover police are actively seeking information that could lead to those responsible for the destruction of McAloon's stockpile of libations. As reported by Boston.com, the police have taken to social media, sharing a video posted by Buco to attract leads that might explain this costly disturbance.
In the aftermath, buoyed by community spirit, the shop's floor, once awash with a mixture of glass and alcohol, was tended by volunteers whose spontaneous kindness transcended the shock of the vandalism. Buco, overwhelmed by the groundswell of support, expressed gratitude in a video, remarking, "My phone’s been ringing off the hook… people are coming in with brooms, mops… as bad as this was, the beauty of what I’m seeing now buries what happened," as he told Boston.com. The vandal's motives may remain unclear, but the strength and unity of North Andover shine through the shards left in their wake.
