On a brisk evening at the Riverdale Target, a scene of community engagement unfolded as local police officers traded their typical roles to become personal shoppers for a group of fifth graders. The 'Shop with a Cop' event, which took place this past Monday night, featured 25 students from Mississippi Elementary and Sand Creek Elementary who were personally selected to participate in the annual holiday spree. "It's a great way for our officers to interact with the kids and get to know them a little bit more and kind of spread that holiday joy," officer Tommy Hall of the Coon Rapids Police Department told the city's official website.
Lasting for an hour and flanked by four police squad cars, volunteers from Target and Toys for Joy assisted as each child, paired with an officer, maneuvered through the aisles with a budget of $250. "Each kid gets $250 and what we tell them is you can buy gifts for yourself, buy gifts for family members, siblings, parents, whoever," Hall mentioned in a statement obtained by the official City of Coon Rapids website. While the event is aimed at gifting, it also fosters a positive interaction between law enforcement and the youth.
Witnessing the children make thoughtful gift selections offered a heartwarming glimpse into their young minds. Tiffany Davis, a volunteer with Toys for Joy for just over a year, expressed her delight in helping. "The girl that I helped shop with a cop right now, she actually has a five-year-old brother and his birthday is after Christmas," Davis said, according to the city's news release. Her role enabled her to observe firsthand the consideration these children showed in their selections, focusing not just on themselves but also on their loved ones.
Choosing the perfect gift among a myriad of options, however, can sometimes be challenging for the kids, Hall explained. "They will buy a couple things for themselves, but they love being able to buy toys and whatever for siblings, for parents, for grandparents, cousins," he said. In the end, the police officers even stepped in, helping to wrap the chosen gifts before the children and their parents left home, the packages and goodie bags from Target in tow to make their holiday even brighter.
