The search for a new city manager in Dallas hit a roadblock during a recent city council meeting when not enough members showed up to make a quorum. Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Adam Bazaldua expressed disappointment in the outcome of the meeting that was aimed at interviewing candidates and hiring for the crucial role, according to a statement from the council member.

"As city council members, our first responsibility is to show up when called," Bazaldua asserted, pointing out that despite recent discussions on procedures, the absence of a quorum suggests neglect of the responsibilities delineated, by the city charter, as per the City of Dallas. The inability to progress in the meeting has been considered a setback for the governance process. The issue here lies not just in the mechanics of bureaucracy, but in the very way such neglect casts shadows on the city's ability to secure credible leadership.

Bazaldua, who is not part of the Ad Hoc Committee on Administrative Affairs and was not responsible for scheduling the failed meeting, has reiterated the importance of hiring a city manager for the governance of Dallas. “Hiring a city manager is one of the most critical duties of any city council member," he stated, stressing the need to prioritize and swiftly complete this process. His concerns are not unfounded, given that multiple executive city staff members are currently in interim positions, as cited by the City of Dallas.
