A Dearborn man stands accused of the first-degree murder of his 70-year-old mother following a domestic incident. Yesterday, Wayne County Prosecutor's Office announced Abrahim Hassan Alfagieh, 36, had been arraigned and denied bond. The tragedy unfolded on the evening of Sunday when Dearborn police, responding to a 911 call, discovered Jamila Alwan with a fatal stab wound to her neck. The charges suggest Alfagieh stabbed his mother before making the emergency call. The Detroit News reported that no attorney is listed for Alfagieh yet.
Upcoming court proceedings for Alfagieh include a probable cause conference on Dec. 23 and a preliminary exam on Dec. 30. According to CBS News Detroit, Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin expressed gratitude for the quick action of detectives and prosecutors and extended sympathies to those grieving the loss of Alwan. "Our hearts remain with the family and loved ones of the deceased," Shahin was quoted as saying.
Alfagieh's arrest comes amidst a worrying trend of domestic violence in the state. The recent history includes several other cases, such as a Monroe County woman accused of stabbing her husband and a Warren woman arrested in the fatal shooting of her boyfriend. As reported by The Detroit News, Michigan law enforcement agencies recorded over 64,000 incidents of domestic violence in 2022, with women constituting the majority of victims.
