To address concerns over youth substance abuse, the Dearborn Police Department is now providing free drug and alcohol testing kits to parents, these kits are designed as a primary tool for identifying potential drug use among children and offering immediate results for quick intervention. The contents of these kits include a 5-panel drug and alcohol test alongside a separate nicotine test, allowing parents the means to privately assess the involvement of their children in risky behaviors involving substances that pose a danger to their wellness and future.
The initiative, named Parental Evaluation Resource Kits (PERK), is aimed not just at detection but also at fostering an environment where communication remains robust within family structures, as "PERK evaluation kits are a private, convenient first step to ease the anxiety and uncertainty for parents who suspect their child may be involved in risky behavior and is using dangerous substances," Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin expressed in a release cited by FOX 2 Detroit.
Moreover, the kits come with included resource information directing parents to community support groups such as the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS) and Leaders Advancing & Helping Communities (LAHC), according to ClickOnDetroit, these organizations may provide additional guidance and services to families facing the challenge of substance use among their young ones.
While these kits serve a pivotal role in the initial stages of addressing the predicaments of substance misuse, the Dearborn Police Department emphasizes that they are not a substitute for professional diagnosis or treatment confessing that, "PERK is not meant to diagnose substance abuse disorders and may not be the most effective way to determine if a child is engaging in substance abuse," a fact further elaborated by the Detroit Free Press. As such, families are prompted to seek the expertise of licensed substance abuse counselors who can provide a path forward in such delicate situations.
Parents can obtain PERK kits at any time from the lobby of the Dearborn Police Department, available every day of the week. Alternatively, they can call 313-943-2241 for more information, ensuring easy access to the tools needed to support their children's health and future.
