Detroit Officer Recovering After Being Dragged by Vehicle, Police Search for Fleeing Teen SuspectSource: Google Street View

A Detroit police officer is recuperating after last night's ordeal that ended with him being dragged by a fleeing vehicle. The unfortunate incident, which occurred around the vicinity of Greenfield and 7 Mile roads, was initiated when patrolling officers observed a stationary vehicle blocking a sidewalk and became suspicious of its occupants' behavior. CBS News Detroit reports that upon the officers' approach and directive for the two teens to exit the car, they were met with noncompliance.

While attempting to open the door of the car, engagement turned violent as the vehicle reversed and then surged forward into a police vehicle, dragging along an officer in an attempt that led to fleeing. Found critically injured blocks away from the scene in the 19400 block of Prevost Street, the driver, an 18-year-old had sustained multiple gunshot wounds as officers defended themselves during the ordeal. "Fearing for their safety, that officer and another officer fired several shots at the fleeing car," Assistant Chief Charles Fitzgerald described the chain of events in a statement obtained by CBS News Detroit.

The officer sustained injuries from the drag but is reported to be in good condition. The 18-year-old found with gunshot wounds seems connected to the vehicle that injured the officer, now lies in a hospital in a critical state. Police are currently leading a manhunt for the second teen, a 17-year-old, who is on the run and is believed to have been involved in the incident. Both teens are suspected to be part of a local gang, as detailed during a briefing by officials.

It was after a K-9 unit was dispatched, according to reporting by ClickOnDetroit, that the suspect remained elusive following the pursuit and they continued to seek the whereabouts of the 17-year-old. The Detroit Police Department is urging anyone with information related to this event to come forward and contact Detroit police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP to aid in the ongoing investigation.
