The longstanding Detroit food producer E.W. Grobbel has made a substantial contribution to Forgotten Harvest, a local food rescue organization, aiming to combat the pervasive issue of food insecurity in metro Detroit. E.W. Grobbel delivered more than 30,000 pounds of frozen corned beef, which translates to about 11,000 pieces of meat, earmarked for distribution amongst the needy families across Metro Detroit. "I just want to say how proud we are to partner with Forgotten Harvest because of the great work that the folks at Forgotten Harvest do—it’s something that really makes a huge difference to our community," Jason Grobbel, president of the family-run company, told FOX 2 Detroit.
In what Forgotten Harvest acknowledges, protein-rich foods are often the most challenging to source—E.W. Grobbel’s contribution is poised to meet the immediate grocery needs of thousands of families. Established since the 1800s, E.W. Grobbel has a history of supporting community organizations, reinforcing their commitment through this notable donation. According to ClickOnDetroit, Annmarie Zaremba, Director of Food Sourcing at Forgotten Harvest, expressed the difficulty in acquiring protein, confirming that meat is usually the most expensive component in a diet, which leads to it often being omitted due to cost.
Food insecurity is an under-recognized issue that could affect anyone. An unexpected expense could thrust a family into a situation where they are unable to afford essentials. In highlighting the precariousness of food security, Annmarie Zaremba spoke to FOX 2 Detroit, stating, "People could be one paycheck away from food insecurity, you have a hot water heater that goes out, your car breaks down, you’re maybe faced with a medical expense."
Facing adversity head-on, Forgotten Harvest continues its mission to alleviate hunger in Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties. As articulated in a statement from their website, every $10 donation to Forgotten Harvest translates to $70 worth of groceries or 40 meals for local residents in need. The organization prides itself on distributing 144,000 pounds of surplus food daily to over 220 emergency food providers. The public can contribute to this cause by donating directly through the Forgotten Harvest website, ensuring that the values of nourishment and community remain tightly knit within Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties.
