Early on New Year's Eve, a two-alarm fire devastated a Northwest D.C. apartment building, resulting in significant injuries and displacements. Fire crews were summoned to the 1400 block of Chapin Street NW shortly before 1 a.m. following reports of residents trapped by the blaze. According to WJLA, the fire initiated on the top floor and aggressively spread to the attic, prompting the evacuation of several residents using an aerial ladder.

In a statement obtained by WUSA9, fire officials reported the rescue of two individuals, with one in serious condition and the other critically injured. Buses were scrambled to aid the displaced as they were ferried to the Columbia Heights Recreation Center, while firefighters, numbering around 100 personnel across 20 units, grappled with the inferno that kept firefighters busy managing hot spots nearly two hours into the attack.

The efforts of D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services ensured that everyone was evacuated from the building, and authorities commenced the provision of assistance to the residents through the services of the American Red Cross. "At 1 o'clock in the morning, in this large building, most people were asleep and it is very challenging to get everyone out safely, but that was accomplished," Vito Maggiolo, a spokesperson for DCFD, told DC News Now.

Investigations into the origins of the fire are still underway, with authorities yet to declare an official cause.
