A man from Everett, Elijah Carvalho, age 22, is set to face a dangerousness hearing after being detained for possession of a Glock converted into a fully-automatic firearm. This arrest, as reported by the Suffolk District Attorney's office, occurred near two middle schools in Dorchester, raising alarms over the potential for widespread harm.
According to the Suffolk District Attorney, Carvalho, was arraigned on charges including machine gun possession, having a large-capacity magazine, receipt of an untraceable firearm, license-lacking firearm and ammunition possession, alongside possession of a Class A substance, Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden announced the updates following Carvalho's apprehension.
The arrest took place in the Coleus Park area, strategically located near the Martin Luther King Jr. elementary school, where Carvalho, fitting the description of an individual allegedly tied to earlier court-related gang altercations, was intercepted by officers of the Boston Youth Violence Strike Force; they recovered the modified 9mm Glock 19 — the serial numbers filed away — alongside six pills identified as possible street fentanyl.
"These converted weapons are alarming both for their firepower and for their uncontrollability, meaning there's a distressing scenario of anyone close to the aim area being struck and injured, or worse," Hayden remarked, as per Suffolk District Attorney, acknowledging the swift action of the officers who heeded the gravity of proximity to local schools and the unfolding dismissal of students, which represented an acute potential for tragedy.
The dangerousness hearing for Carvalho is scheduled for Monday, with a pre-emptive order to hold him without bail by Judge Steven Kim, spotlighting the community's immediate concerns surrounding gun violence and the continued circulation of illegally modified firearms.
