In the wake of a series of nail-biter elections in Ohio, where local races often hang by a mere handful of votes, Secretary of State Frank LaRose underscores the resonating idea that every vote carries weight with an array of general elections in 2024 concluding on a razor-thin margin — some ending in ties or decided by no more than three votes — LaRose's reminder resonates deeply. "Never let anyone tell you a single vote doesn't matter, which is why we continue to make sure it is both easy to vote and hard to cheat in the Buckeye State," Ohio Secretary of State LaRose stated, emphasizing the significance of national and local electoral processes.
The past election cycle saw 23 local races trigger automatic recounts, with deadlocks and minuscule vote differences highlighting the stakes of voter participation. These close calls included issues and levies such as the Hillsdale Local Schools 1.4 mill in Ashland, passed by a mere three votes, and two levies resulting in actual draws in both Muskingum and Shelby counties. Such outcomes illustrate how, in the arithmetic of democracy, every citizen is called to calculate their role wisely.
Looking ahead to the 2025 election cycle in Ohio, with its local elections historically subject to particularly slim margins, LaRose is handing out a clear message: Voters should not only be registered but also be prepared to bring to life their democratic rights. "Local elections which occur in odd-numbered years like 2025 can come down to notoriously slim margins, so it is more important than ever to ensure you are registered to vote and prepared to participate in our democracy in the New Year," he added, according to the Ohio Secretary of State LaRose, encouraging voter participation.
Potential candidates contemplating decisively stepping into the fray next year are also given a helpful nudge by LaRose's office. The Ohio Secretary of State’s office has rolled out the 2025 Candidate Requirement Guide, providing a roadmap for navigating the electoral landscape. The 2025 Elections Calendar is also available, flagging pivotal dates such as the May 6, 2025 upcoming primary. Voters and candidates alike are encouraged to review these resources to better prepare for their participation in the electoral process.
