Traffic on US Highway 550 between Ouray and Silverton is expected to be snarled due to necessary winter maintenance announced by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). According to CDOT, operations are set to begin at 11 a.m. on December 3. These efforts aim to ensure safety during the challenging winter conditions often encountered on this route. Drivers planning to travel through the mountainous pass should prepare for stoppages that may last over half an hour. These delays are a result of snow removal efforts and the ongoing risk of avalanches.
In what is set to be a day of interruptions, motorists on US 550 will face full halts, and the CDOT has advised commuters to pad their schedules with substantial extra time. The closures will affect both directions of travel, northbound traffic will be brought to a standstill near Mile Point 80 at the Red Mountain Pass summit, and southbound vehicles will be similarly impeded near the Idorado Mine at MP 82, flaggers will direct affected individuals through these stoppages serves as a necessary, albeit inconvenient, navigation aid in these pressing times.
Despite the inconvenience, these measures are crucial for ensuring roadway safety during winter conditions characterized by heavy snowfall and potential avalanches. CDOT's preemptive maintenance efforts reflect a commitment to preventing road closures that could last significantly longer should an avalanche occur without proper prophylactic measures being taken.
