Following an unexpected explosion at the Southwest Recycling & Transfer Station (SWRTS) in Snohomish County, services have been temporarily halted, directing waste customers to an alternative facility. The incident occurred at 10:35 a.m. yesterday when a refuse transport container detonated for unknown reasons, but thankfully no injuries were reported among visitors or staff. According to the county's official announcement, all present were kept safe and emergency crews were quickly mobilized to manage the resulting smoke and fumes, Snohomish County reported.
Efforts to understand the blast are underway as the Public Works Department collaborates with fire officials to investigate the cause, meanwhile, they assess the damage to the recycling facility. In the interim, the public is advised to use the Airport Road Recycling & Transfer Station (ARTS) located at 10700 Minuteman Dr., in South Everett for their solid waste disposal needs. Snohomish County Public Works Director Kelly Snyder expressed relief and appreciation for the staff's effective response and the swift arrival of the fire department at the scene unwinding with efforts to resume normal operations.
The nature of the explosion remains to be clarified, but what stands clear is the efficiency of the community's emergency response team, praised by Director Snyder for their performance under pressure. The temporary closure of SWRTS has rerouted waste services to ARTS, and while the shift is expected to cause some inconvenience, the priority remains the safety of the community and the thorough investigation of the incident. Further updates from the county will shed light on the facility's status and the anticipated timeline for repairs and the restoration of service.
