Ellie Young's family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against her ex-boyfriend, Jackson Hopper, and his mother after Young was fatally shot at Shelby Farms Park. The tragedy occurred in October, following Young's participation in a breast cancer walk, as reported by WREG.
The lawsuit alleges that Hopper's mother, Martha Hopper, was complicit in fostering a dangerous environment by misrepresenting her son's propensity for violence. The family asserts they were dissuaded from seeking a restraining order based on false assurances made by Martha Hopper, who, according to the court documents, knew of her son's "prior violent tendencies," and his "assaultive behavior," in previous relationships, as WREG details. Not only did Hopper's mother fail to alert the Young family of the imminent danger, but according to the suit, she also allegedly lied about her son's violent history.
Young's family, seeking $10 million in compensatory damages, is deeply concerned that Hopper will utilize recent financial windfalls, from an inheritance of property worth over $3 million, to post bond and evade the law. Noted in an investigation by FOX13 Memphis, there's a possibility that Hopper's family wealth, which includes considerable land ownership, could assist in his release pending trial.
The family’s lawsuit references a pursuit that ended in Dyer County, following the fatal shooting of Ellie Young, a first-year medical student, as reported by Action News 5. In the wake of her death, the Young family grieves the loss of her life and the potential it held. Jackson Hopper, who has been indicted on First Degree Murder charges and is currently being held without bond, waived his bond hearing during his November court appearance.
In addition, the lawsuit crucially aims to prevent Hopper from allocating any of the funds from his inheritance, other than for "ordinary living expenses," to ensure that he remains unable to evade the accountability awaiting him in the courts, WREG noted.
