Earlier this morning, a fire erupted in Baltimore's Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood, prompting a swift response from city firefighters. Crews converged on the 1800 block of Riggs Avenue to battle flames that extended to several rowhomes. According to WBALTV, two residential structures were occupied, while the others remained vacant. Thanks to quick actions by individuals who alerted occupants by knocking on doors, no injuries were reported.

Battalion Chief Kenneth Cash provided a detailed account of the incident, explaining to WBALTV that they "encountered heavy fire conditions on the first and second floor of the occupied dwelling, which started in the rear, and we had an extension (of the fire) over to (neighboring homes) with heavy fire conditions in the rear with power lines down." Team efforts to mitigate the situation were aided significantly when BGE arrived to cut power, allowing firefighters to focus on containing the blaze.

The extent of the damage is still under assessment. WMAR-2 News reported that five homes were affected by the devastating fire. The fire has since been contained and extinguished, but the incident leaves a stark reminder of the susceptibility of both vacant and occupied homes to the whims of an untamed element.
