Downtown Orlando's nightlife scene has encountered a setback, with five nightclubs recently closing their doors. The clubs in question — Chillers, Irish Shannon’s, Cahoots, High Tide, and Ember — were all operated by Church Street Entertainment, also known as Downtown Entertainment LLC. The closures have stirred discussions on the challenges of maintaining nightlife venues in the downtown area.
According to FOX 35 Orlando, the city has confirmed that the business owners withdrew their permits for after-midnight alcohol sales, a decision that coincides with the clubs shutting down. This reduction in entertainment options comes amidst broader concerns over stringent regulations, high operational costs, and safety issues, particularly in light of a recent mass shooting event. District 5 Commissioner Shan Rose stressed, "I’ve met with a multitude of staff members over the last week to talk about this because there are these rumors that we want to close downtown. That’s not right." She emphasized the city's focus on ensuring a thriving downtown environment where individuals can unwind after work.
Yet, the closures appear part of a larger pattern of challenges for such establishments. The Orlando Weekly reported that new regulations, which include a limit on the number of nightclubs per downtown block and additional permissions required for late-night operations, have contributed to the distress. In a recent compliance operation dubbed "Operation Night Cap," it was discovered that 23 downtown bars and nightclubs were not adhering to after-midnight sales permits, and drugs were allegedly being sold by employees at 17 clubs.
While these venues have closed, Downtown Entertainment LLC's business license remains active, leading to speculation about potential future projects. Scott Kotroba, owner of Bullitt Bar, expressed frustration over the impact of recent events, telling Orlando Weekly, "The bad press is the last thing they needed," pointing out how business at his bar has dropped significantly.
