Former Seattle Police Chief Adrian Diaz was terminated after an investigation by the city's Office of Inspector General found evidence of a relationship with Jamie Tompkins, a former SPD employee. Mayor Bruce Harrell wrote to Seattle's legislative and law enforcement community, stating that Diaz not only had an inappropriate relationship but also violated trust by lying about it. The investigation revealed evidence, including a romantic letter, that contradicted Diaz's claims, as reported by The Seattle's Times.
Diaz's violations went beyond dishonesty; the Inspector General's report listed several SPD policies he broke, including those on honesty, professionalism, conflicts of interest, and personal relationships, according to Police1.
"While they take time, this is why we do investigations that are robust and thorough and why we use facts to support decisions that are aligned with the values of our city," Mayor Harrell said, emphasizing the city's commitment to integrity and due process, as reported on Police1. The Seattle Police Department is currently led by an interim chief, and Mayor Harrell is expected to announce a permanent chief in the coming days as the department works to restore its credibility.
