Navy Strength, the tropical cocktail bar that's been pouring rum-forward drinks on Belltown's 2nd Avenue for a decade, is closing for good after service on October 31, 2026. Co-owners Chris Elford and Anu Apte announced the shutdown on the bar's Facebook page, pointing to a lease that's ending and plain old industry fatigue as the reasons behind the decision.

“It's been a real privilege to serve tropical drinks to Belltown these last ten years,” the owners wrote, according to FOX 13 Seattle, adding bluntly that “the bar's lease is up and the owners are very tired.” The bar never reached the financial performance its owners had hoped for, and the closure statement noted that Navy Strength had employed Seattle residents throughout its run. The timing lines up almost exactly with its opening: Navy Strength officially opened on March 30, 2017, per NA Bar Finder, putting its total run at roughly nine and a half years.

A Decorated Run Built on Shaky Financial Footing

Navy Strength's closure caps a run that earned it serious industry respect. In July 2018, the bar was named “Best New American Bar” at the Spirited Awards during the Tales of the Cocktail festival in New Orleans, according to Seattle magazine — one of the craft cocktail industry's highest honors. That success came despite a rocky start: before the bar even opened, an approved bank construction loan was abruptly rescinded shortly after the owners signed their lease, according to SevenFifty Daily, forcing Elford and Apte to finance the buildout through friends, family, and private funding while launching Navy Strength and sibling venue No Anchor nearly simultaneously.

Rather than running as a single-theme tiki lounge, Navy Strength built its menu around classic tiki drinks, tropical creations, and a bi-annually rotating travel section spotlighting global spirits and spice profiles from places like India and the Philippines, Seattle magazine's reporting notes. Next door, No Anchor, which Elford and Apte opened in late 2016, earned a James Beard Award nomination as a Best New Restaurant semifinalist in 2017, as reported by Imbibe Magazine.

Final Horror-Themed Menu and a November Sale

Before the lights go out, Navy Strength is running its annual Nightmare on Wall Street pop-up through the end of October, featuring new horror-film-inspired drink menus. This year's lineup draws inspiration from Sinners, Suspiria, Drag Me to Hell, Re-Animator, Pearl, Mandy, and American Psycho. The owners said they expect strong patronage during the bar's final month to help settle business debts, and the Nightmare on Wall Street menu will run until the October 31 closing date.

Once the bar shuts its doors, Navy Strength will hold a public inventory sale in November, offering up glassware, bar equipment, and decor, with specific dates and times to be announced later.

A Wider Shift Along Belltown's 2nd Avenue

Navy Strength isn't closing in isolation. Vinnie's Wine Shop, the adjacent natural wine and seafood bar also co-owned by Apte and Elford, will permanently close on the same date, October 31, after its landlord declined a lease renewal proposal, according to Secret Seattle. Both venues operate under Canoe Ventures, the Belltown-centered hospitality umbrella Apte and Elford founded in 2015 that also includes the cocktail lounge Rob Roy — a portfolio Apte has been building since taking over Rob Roy back in 2009.

The closures come amid lease changes, while Navy Strength's owners have also cited industry fatigue. Even as Navy Strength and Vinnie's wind down, Elford isn't stepping away from the business — he's pivoting toward Fremont, co-founding three new concepts called Good Bones Coffee, Glitter Paw Lounge, and Marigolds inside the 121-year-old Fremont Trolley Barn this fall, according to Sip Magazine. The new ventures are being launched through Here Today Brewery & Kitchen.
