After over 25 years on the run, fugitive Jose Mauricio Rivera has been caught. The 58-year-old was arrested in El Salvador and is facing charges for a 1997 crime. The Montgomery County Department of Police stated that Rivera was wanted for second-degree attempted murder after allegedly shooting his estranged wife multiple times.
In a Silver Spring elevator on Eastern Avenue, Rivera's wife, who had recently separated from him and was under a restraining order, was shot. Montgomery County Police, with help from the FBI, El Salvador National Police, and Interpol, tracked Rivera to El Salvador. After fleeing the country, Rivera was arrested there in April 2023 and was recently extradited back to Montgomery County.
In addition to the second-degree attempted murder charge, Rivera faces two counts of first-degree assault. He was extradited and booked at the Central Processing Unit in Montgomery County on Thursday, where he is awaiting a bond hearing.
