Plans are underway for a specialty grocery store to anchor a burgeoning mixed-use development in the heart of Goodyear's new downtown district, GSQ. The Phoenix Business Journal reports that the developer, Red Development, has submitted speculative plans that include a 13,500-square-foot grocery store, alongside two restaurants spanning an area of 7,800 square feet, at the intersection of Bullard Avenue and McDowell Road.
The identity of the grocery store tenant has sparked local interest, with documents indicating coveted retailer Trader Joe's may potentially fill the space. Although these plans have been submitted to the city, ABC15 notes that Trader Joe's itself has not confirmed an expansion into Goodyear. It's possible that, despite local anticipation, another grocer could claim the spot.
The mixed-use space of GSQ is set to include substantial retail offerings and city amenities. Construction has already begun on several new restaurants, such as The Stillery and Copper & Sage, and with promising sales figures being reported, there is anticipation surrounding the district's future successes. "It's becoming a destination dining location," Chuck Wells, a senior vice president for Kidder Mathews, told The Phoenix Business Journal. The city awaits further retailer confirmations with a collective eagerness, hopeful that the planned developments will serve to elevate Goodyear's downtown to a new level of social and economic activity.
