Littleton City Council Member Gretchen Rydin is poised to quickly vacate her seat following her recent ascension to the Colorado State Legislature, a move that's prompting a special appointment procedure to fill her spot on the council. Rydin, who served as Mayor Pro Tem, will formally resign at the end of the January 7, 2025, regular city council meeting, as reported by the City of Littleton.
Littleton's city charter mandates the council to seamlessly appoint a new member within 30 days after a council seat becomes vacant. Interested residents can submit their applications starting November 20, with a December 1 deadline. The vetting process will include interviews throughout December, and the successful candidate is to officially be appointed on January 21, 2025. This hurried timeline underscores the importance of maintaining a full roster for Littleton's local governance.
Rydin's notable accomplishments during her tenure include her representation of Littleton on the Arapahoe County Homeless Coordinating Committee and her work as a liaison to various community service groups. She has been a vocal advocate for affordable housing, playing a key role in passing an inclusive housing ordinance. Rydin’s relentless push for a coordinated response to homelessness has led to actionable plans, bringing resources closer to those in need.
Mayor Kyle Schlachter expressed his commendations on Rydin's new legislative role, stressing her commitment to the community. "I want to congratulate Representative-elect Rydin on her successful campaign to serve our community in the General Assembly," he said. "I know she will continue to work hard listening to needs of our residents and implement policies that improve the lives of everyone who calls Littleton home, just as she has done during her time on the city council," said Schlachter, as per the City of Littleton.
Applicants eyeing the soon-to-be-vacant seat should reach out to City Clerk Colleen Norton at [email protected] with a letter of interest and resume. Additional details about the application process are accessible through the clerk’s office, inviting community members to become directly involved in the shaping of Littleton’s future.
