An unsettling episode unfolded this Wednesday near Sharpstown High School when a gunman reportedly fired shots at students off-campus, leading to a school lockdown. The harrowing event began when a white, two-door pickup truck confronted a group of five or six students in a car, with the assailant exiting the vehicle to unleash a barrage of bullets. Miraculously, no students were injured, and the suspect hastily vacated the vicinity, as per Click2Houston.
The tensions around Sharpstown High surged when a subsequent shooting involving another car with teenagers occurred shortly after the initial confrontation. As the police worked to piece together the ajar puzzle, they came to believe that the shooter possibly knew the teenagers targeted. In a reflexive action to safeguard the students, the school transitioned from "secure mode" to a full lockdown upon the suspicion that there was a connection between the shooter and a student within the school walls, as reported in a FOX 26 Houston article.
During the height of the crisis, parents and faculty were kept abreast of the situation through two emails, detailing the necessity of the lockdown after shots were fired near the school amidst the morning drop-off chaos. Inside the school, no weapons were found and the lockdown was eventually lifted at 12:25 p.m. HISD ensured that despite the incident's proximity, it did not spill over onto campus grounds.
Parents in the community like Mattie Johnson voiced their deep concerns over the incidents involving youth near the school. "They can't even go to school. It happened early in the morning. This street is full of kids... So, for them to say that they were shooting all in the streets. They could have shot and killed anybody," Johnson told Click2Houston. These instances cast yet another shadow on the safety of the area surrounding the school, a sentiment shared amongst many parents and community members.
The Houston Police Department has stayed quiet about the investigation but confirmed finding a suspicious vehicle with bullet holes on South Gessner Rd. Houston ISD Police Chief Shamara Garner praised the department's quick response and confirmed they are leading the investigation. The high school has returned to normal operations, focusing on student safety. Houston police are still searching for the suspect involved in the shooting.
